Organ confined cancer of the prostate (pT2)
It is best if the cancer is just in the prostate, and has not gone out through the capsule or rind of the prostate. This is called Organ Confined disease and given a stage of pT2. Ideally then, there should be normal benign tissue between the cancer and the edge of the specimen known as the surgical margin. This is called organ confined disease with negative margins. See Figure 1. This has the best long term outcome depending on the Gleason score or grade of the cancer. The higher the Gleason score, the more likely it is to recur. Gleason 6 and 7 cancers have the best prognosis.
