Non Organ confined cancer of the prostate (pT3) |  |
Sometimes the cancer will have extended through the capsule of the prostate, when it is known as non organ confined or having extra-capsular extension (ECE). The stage is then given as pT3A. See Figure 4. This means that the cancer is on the way to spreading. In this circumstance it is more difficult to achieve a negative margin. Nevertheless, this is still possible, and cure of the cancer is still common. Figure 4: Prostate with Extra Capsular Extension or pT3A cancer. There is still normal benign tissue around the cancer indicating that all the apparent cancer has been removed. There is, therefore still an excellent chance the patient has been cured.. |
